Science on the Swan is the showcase of the very best of medical science and health research in Western Australia. It brings together all five of WA’s major Universities (The University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Murdoch University, Edith Cowan University and The University of Notre Dame) in partnership with the key teaching and research hospitals, the medical research institutes of WA and the WA Government through the Department of Health and the Office of Science. The annual conference, which focuses on different areas of research in subsequent years, brings together an outstanding international faculty, leading researchers from across Australia and the medical research talent of WA.

In 2015 the focus of the conference will be “Hot Topics in Life Course and Development”. In addition to plenary lectures, there will be symposia concerned with the influences of pre-pregnancy, pregnancy and the immediate postnatal period on later life health and disease; on the developing brain, especially in relation to conditions such as attention deficit disorders, autism and early school performance; the microbiome, the bacteria that co-habit our bodies and affect the way our bodies work; how blood vessels are made and how to make and keep healthy blood vessels; changes in how our blood circulation system works in exercise, cancer and stress, and finally how and why metabolic disease, diabetes and obesity develop and might be prevented.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Science on the Swan Inaugural Conference 2015 in Perth.

Kind regards,

John Challis and Michael Berndt
